Pixel 6 Pro release: Google’s most advanced phone takes aim at iPhone 13 and Galaxy S21

Google’s new Pixel 6 smartphone range is possibly the worst kept secret of 2021. In a bid to avoid the endless leaks and rumours that usually plague flagship launches, Google teased the design and major new features of its latest smartphone back in August.

After months of excitement, we finally know exactly what these devices will bring to the market with Google revealing full specs at a global launch event. There are two models to choose from including a standard Pixel 6 which gets a 6.4-inch screen and dual-lens camera – you can see full details about this phone here.

If you want something bigger and even better, then you’ll probably want to opt for Google’s premium flagship called the Pixel 6 Pro. This is the first time Google has called one of its devices a “flagship” and it’s clearly taking aim at the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S21 and new iPhone 13.

This top-end phone gets an improved 6.7-inch Smooth Display with a 120Hz refresh rate for speedy scrolling and stutter-free gameplay. Google has made this screen adaptive so it only switches to that ultimate rate when needed and not when users are simply staring at some text or reading a boring email. This has been included in a bid to help preserve battery life.

Spin the phone around, you’ll find a unique-looking camera system that now stretches across the rear of the phone in a black strip. Google calls this new design, the Camera Bar.

Google says this triple-camera system is its “most advanced” ever. As well as improvements to images shot in low light, you can now get up close and personal thanks to a 4x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom that uses AI to sharpen and boost the image.

There are also some other impressive features coming to the cameras on the Pixel 6 Pro with this device now featuring something called the “Magical Eraser” which gets rid of things in the background by simply scrubbing your finger over them in the editing mode. It’s really clever and means you can remove people or unsightly objects that may have photobombed your family during an outing to the beach. Other impressive camera features include the option to add motion to your action shots and photos of friends and family can be sharpened up thanks to an update called Face Unblur. There’s even a way to shoot 4K selfie videos of your face for the ultimate posts on Instagram.

So that’s everything that’s changed on the outside, but there’s also lots going on under the hood including a new processor that’s being made by Google.

Yes, gone is the usual Snapdragon chip with the tech giant now opting for its own-brand Tensor chip.

If the power stats are to be believed then the Pixel 6 Pro will be around 80 percent faster than the Pixel 5 which sounds mightily impressive. This Tensor chip also allows the Pixel 6 Pro to be smarter with the device able to automatically add in punctuation as you dictate texts or emails. This improved language recognition also enables the Tensor-powered Pixel to translate in real-time – that’s something that’s not been possible before.

As well as being a lot quicker thanks to that Tensor chip, the Pixel 6 Pro should also last longer with Google promising all-day life thanks to an Adaptive Battery that optimises things and even learns your favourite apps to keep them running whilst closing applications you don’t need or never use.

When things do run low the Pro can be refilled wirelessly or at rapid speeds via a 30W charger. It’s worth noting that Google isn’t shipping a plug in the box so you’ll need to invest in a new power pack to take full advantage of those better refills. Other useful extras coming to the Pro include IP68 protection which means it should survive a soaking and it’s covered in Gorilla Glass Victus for improved durability.

There are also stereo speakers, access to 5G data speeds and 128GB of in-built storage.

Finally, Google is promising five years of updates to its new Pixels which will keep them safe from new threats and also add bonus features. And the firm is boasting that its new Titan M2 chip – which works alongside the main Tensor processor – will make the Pro the most secure phone ever.

If all that sounds exciting then the Pixel 6 Pro will be available later this month in the UK. It will start from £849.
