India had earlier lifted the prized trophy in 1983 and had to wait a long time before doing it again. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India won their second ODI title by defeating Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 2 April 2011. Six, Sachin Tendulkar is being fielded by his teammates, to name a few.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on its Twitter handle highlighted some of the exciting finals.

Sri Lanka gave India a target of 274 for six on the back of Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten century. A late blitz of 22 off 9 balls from Thisara Perera gave the Lancs the momentum to chase India.

India sent back the pavilion on the second ball of Virender Sehwag. His opening partner Sachin Tendulkar also did not last long as India were put on the back foot in the 7th over.

But the 83-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli brought India the victory and brought them back into the competition.

After Kohli’s dismissal, Dhoni promoted himself and shared a 109-run partnership with Gambhir to take India at a touching distance. Gambhir lost three of a character and the World Cup player – Yuvraj Singh.

The stylish left-hander along with skipper Dhoni played an unbeaten innings of 91 off 79 balls to India with 10 balls to spare. Dhoni ended Yuvraj with a six off Nuwan Kulasekara and engulfed his team in scenes of joy that will last forever in the memories of Indian fans.
