Football has been dogged by controversies with fans and players since the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), with little left of some decisions being made, especially in the Premier League of England. But it seems that football is not the only sport that has a problem when it comes to decisions based on video replays. Even cricket was not spared. ‘Soft signal’, ‘umpire call’ and some decisions made by third umpires in the game in general have led to controversies. The latest coming in the second ODI between New Zealand vs Bangladesh is being played at Hegel Oval in Christchurch.
On Tuesday, a decision by the third umpire caused widespread controversy and the bowler Kyle Jamieson and some of his New Zealand teammates were shocked.
Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal delivered a superb delivery to the bowler. Jamison actually fell short to complete a superb comeback catch. The on-field umpire called the third umpire to see if the catch was taken cleanly, with a ‘soft signal’ being ‘out’.
While making the decision, the third umpire is heard saying, “The ball was found on the ground, and the player is not completely in control”. He reversed the ‘soft signal’ and called the batsman ‘not out’.
After the ‘not out’ decision came on the big screen, surprised by the decision by the third umpire, Jamieson and some other New Zealand players looked around in panic.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris tweeted about the ‘no catch’ call, saying, “I can’t remember the last time I saw something like this, but didn’t see it.”
This happens in every game. If the umpires are not giving it then be consistent …. I can’t remember the last time I saw something like this, but it is not #crazy https://t.co/ymitdRq586

At that time Tamim Iqbal was batting at 53/1 with Bangladesh for 34 runs. The Bangladesh captain was dismissed for 78 runs off 108 balls thanks to the brilliant football skills of Jimmy Neesham.
But the real star of the Bangladeshi innings was Mohammad Mithun who scored 271 for six in his stipulated 50 overs to help his team to 271 runs.
