England Gareth Southgate believes that Mason Mount now only gets the credit he deserves as Thomas Tuchel now manages him at Chelsea and not Frank Lampard.
Southgate is a huge fan of the 22-year-old and named him in his opening XI for the seventh straight game for the World Cup qualifier on Sunday against Albania, with the midfielder scoring England’s second goal in a 2–0 win.
Although his and Lampard’s loyalty to the player has been questioned in some quarters, some Southgate believe that only after the manager’s switch to Stamford Bridge has changed.
What did Southgate say?
After managing to mount at Derby and then Chelsea, Lampard was accused of bias when he continued to choose the midfielder in his favor.
Those charges followed Mt. internationally, despite scoring four goals in 15 international appearances.
Lampard was sacked in January and replaced by Tashel, who continued to pick up Mt. and Southgate says he should eventually silence his critics for once.
Speaking after Sunday’s win in Tirana, Southgate said of Mt.: “He is a great player, but I was saying this in the autumn. I think now that Thomas Tuchel has chosen him, everyone will agree. When it was Frank, it does not count for some reason.
“He is an extraordinary player. He finds space sensibly, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances and he can score goals. I thought his performance tonight was great. “
Reflecting on the rest of the team’s performances, Southgate said: “I felt Phil Foden was good too. I felt that our attackers were four good. [Declan] Rice and [Kalvin] Phillips read the game well, competed well and won the ball early. We had over 70% possession and controlled the game. In the end, we created more chances and we could have scored more. “
The bigger picture
England’s win in Albania earned them two of their two World Cup wins and qualified for the home clash with Poland on Wednesday.
Despite featuring in both matches so far in this international break, Mount Wembley is likely to feature once again as the Three Lions won their third consecutive win.
He will then return to Chelsea, where he has already made 39 appearances in all competitions, finishing fourth in the Tuchel Premier League and still in the Champions League and FA Cup.
