Roy Williams is a Hall of Famer with 903 wins in 33 seasons as the college’s head coach. He earned the right to walk on his own terms.

North Carolina’s official men’s basketball Twitter account stirred up on Thursday morning when it released a press release announcing that Williams had retired from coaching. The 70-year-old elder is scheduled to address the media during the 4 pm ET news conference on Thursday.

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale spoke out for everyone when he tweeted, “I thought it was [an] April Fool’s joke, but it’s true. “

Williams “disappointed at college basketball leading direction” According to Jeff Goodman of the stadium, Who reported that Williams was concerned about the increase in transfers and the ongoing fight over the name, picture and likeness (NIL). It is possible that Williams was considering retirement earlier and those issues pushed him towards the door.
In 18 seasons in North Carolina, Williams 485–163 and captured national championships in 2005, 2009 and 2017. He coached Kansas for 15 seasons prior to his UNC stint, with a 418–101 record and four Final Four appearances.
With 903 total wins, Williams ranks All-Time Wins List on Third Division I Only behind Mike Kreiszski and Jim Boehm. He is the only coach in NCAA history with 400 wins in two different schools.
