Nokia of Finland has settled a multi-year patent battle with Lenovo Group of China, the world’s largest PC maker, resolving pending litigation in all jurisdictions, the companies said on Wednesday.

While the terms of the Finnish-license agreement remain confidential, Lenovo will pay a net balance for Nokia, the Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer said.

A Nokia spokesperson refused to disclose the financial details.

Nokia began its legal battle in 2019 against Lenovo over alleged infringement of 20 video-compression technology patents and had cases in the United States, Brazil and India, in addition to six cases in Germany.

Lenovo filed a lawsuit against Nokia in a California court.

A Munich court ruled in September that Lenovo infringed on one of Nokia’s patents, and ordered injunctions from retailers and the recall of the products. The order was stayed by a German appeals court in November.

Lenovo’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer John Moolgre said, “The global agreement will enable future collaboration between our companies for the benefit of customers worldwide.”

Nokia’s patent portfolio is made up of approximately 20,000 patent families, including more than 3,500 patent families, which have been declared essential to the 5G technology standard.

Last month Nokia signed a deal with Samsung for a patent to cover its innovations in video standards.

Its Scandinavian rival, Ericsson, has also received ongoing patent disputes with Samsung and KPN NV with the Dutch telecommunications company.
