No move for UT in Marathi speaking areas in Karnataka: MHA

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that the government has no proposal to declare a Marathi-dominated region in Karnataka as a union territory of Karnataka.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai said in a written reply, “As per Census 2011, the Marathi speaking population in the border sub-districts of Maharashtra-Karnataka is 55,98,325. Marathi speaking population was found during Census 2011, in the towns / cities of Dudhni, Ichalkaranji, Kagal, Kamalnagar, Mendargi, Nipani, Sadalgi and Sankeshwar. “

The reply stated, “Karnataka and Maharashtra as Union Territories have received demand and representation from time to time from various individuals and organizations to make it a Marathi dominated region. However, no such proposal is under consideration. “
