New Zealand vs Bangladesh: Trent Boult, Martin Guptill Power New Zealand to Emphatic Win in 1 ODI

New Zealand captain Tom Latham called the Black Caps “terrible” as a star after Trent Boult and Martin Guptill scored an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the opening one-day international in Dunedin on Saturday. With the swing King Boult shaking the ball both ways, New Zealand bowled out Bangladesh for an average of 131 runs and made a vigorous cameo with Guptill’s bat to drop the target with over 28 overs to spare. In New Zealand’s first ODI in 12 months, Boult took four wickets for 27 runs while Guptill scored 38 from 19 balls.

“We didn’t play for a while and it was about setting the tone, winning the toss and bowling and I think Trent and Matt Henry did that awesome, and it was great for us to chase 130 runs in 20 overs. “Captain Tom Latham said.

“And we know how devastating he can be when he plays like this, and it was great to break Chase’s back and finish it for the boys was a pretty clinical performance.”

Two of Guptill’s 38 runs came off with the help of four fours and three fours before Taskin Ahmed got a faint edge and wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim completed the out.

In his first ODI, Devon Conway was the second wicket to fall to 27, while opener Henry Nicholls was unbeaten on 49 runs.

Nicholls was denied his 12th half-century when another debutant Will Young (11 not out) scored the winning run with a single.

Trouble for tourists

When Bangladesh lost the toss and the batsman was sent as the opener and captain Tamim Iqbal immediately hit a six off Boult’s third ball and struck a four in Matt Henry’s second over.

But on a ground where the average win score is over 300, the tourists soon got into trouble when the Boult took two wickets in their third over.

He started with the dismissal of Iqbal, trapping him lbw on a straight ball as the Bangladesh captain waited for the ball to swing.

New batsman Soumya Sarkar scored three balls later without scoring and never let Bangladesh recover.

When the tourists were all out in the 42nd over, Iqbal said he was aware that 131 were not quite close.

“There was a lot of soft dismissal. No doubt, he bowled very well but we played some loose shots. We have ourselves to blame,” he said.

Bangladesh came to New Zealand after a 3–0 series win over the West Indies, but six batsmen from Bangladesh reached double figures, not maintaining the top score with Mahmudullah’s 27 of 54.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the only other batsman to score 20 runs with 23 runs.

In addition to Bolt’s four wickets, Jimmy Neesham took two for 27 and Mitchell Sentner took two for 23.

Promoted

Neesham was also central to the third wicket, when he allowed only a return chance to run out at stumps off Mahmudullah and run out to non-striker Mohammad Mithun.

The second match in the three-match series is in Christchurch on Tuesday.
