The Maiden centuries for Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell scored a 164-run win for New Zealand in the third ODI in Wellington on Friday and gave the hosts a clean sweep. Conway scored 126 runs in 110 balls and after winning New Zealand’s toss and being elected to bat, Mitchell was unbeaten 100 and was out for 318 for six. Bangladesh did not succumb to the target of 319, were all out for 154 after 42.4 overs, eight batsmen failed to reach double figures despite Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 76.
Jimmy Neesham and Matt Henry did the damage for New Zealand with the ball, scoring 27 for five and 27 for four respectively.
Paceman Rubel Hussain was one of the Bangladesh bowlers who took three wickets for 70 runs, but the tourists attacked on a green basin reserve wicket.
Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal said, “We were just not good enough.”
“There is no doubt that the Black Caps played incredibly well, but we did not perform. Sometimes small things can hurt you, (dropped) catches and the possibility of a run out.”
Conway was rewarded for capitalizing on the problems of tourists and his century just for the South African-born batsman, who has been in prolific form since being selected for the Black Caps at the end of last year.
His performances include 72 in the second Bangladesh ODI and an unbeaten 99 when he was left stranded in the Twenty20 match against Australia last month.
Mitchell saw that he came to Wellington to score his century on the last ball of the innings to get out of the house before suffering a similar fate as wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim tried to stump him.
“I was just trying to swing as hard as I could,” said Mitchell.
“I will come to them either way. They think it is good to complete the work.”
Both Conway and Mitchell were playing only the third ODI for New Zealand after making their debut as series opener against Bangladesh in Dunedin last week.
New Zealand lost 57 for three after losing three wickets in 13 balls.
Tom Latham and Conway shared a 63-run partnership before New Zealand went for 18 runs.
He was to go on the attack for Conway and Mitchell, combining for 159 runs and putting the match beyond Bangladesh’s reach.
Promoted
Openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar were dismissed in the first five overs and a steady stream of wickets kept any meaningful partnership from forming.
The teams will meet in the next part of the three-match Twenty20 series to be held in Hamilton on Sunday.
