The Navy on Wednesday inducted the third Scorpene-class conventional diesel-electric submarine, INS Karanj, To.
It was commissioned by Admiral VS Shekhawat, former Naval Chief in the Navy, who was earlier the Commanding Officer INS Karanj In the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, a Navy statement said.

The six Scorpene submarines are being built under Project-75 under technology transfer from Mazagan Dock Limited (MDL), Naval Group of France in Mumbai, as part of a $ 3.75 billion deal signed in October 2005. However, the program has hit four — delaying production.
The first submarine of the class, INS Kalvari, Was commissioned in December 2017 and another, INS Khanderi, In September 2019. Fourth, Vela, Watered down in May 2019 and fifth, VagirIn November 2020, and both are undergoing sea trials. The sixth is in an advanced stage of attire.

Special invite
The Navy said Karanja, formerly a Russian-origin Foxtrot class submarine, was decommissioned in 2003.
The year 2021 is being celebrated as the ‘Golden Victory Rain’ to mark the 50 years of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. The old Karanja, commissioned at Riga in the USSR on 4 September 1969, took an active part in the struggle under the command of the then CDR Shekhawat.
The Navy said that to recognize the valiant action of its O crew seers and crew, several personnel were decorated, including the then commanding officer of the Vir Chakra, CDR Shekhawat.
Interestingly, the old Karanja’s commissioning commander, CDR MNR Samant, later became the first chief of the Naval Staff of the newly formed Bangladesh Navy in 1971.
Installation of aip module
Reported by Hindu Earlier, the Navy is looking to install Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) modules on all Scorpene submarines to increase endurance. Initial plans to install AIP plugs on the last two submarines during construction were not interrupted as indigenous modules from the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
On Tuesday, DRDO announced that the indigenous module had surpassed an important milestone in performance and “reached the stage of maturity to fit into target ships.”
The plan is to install modules on all Scorpene submarines as they go for their refits. Calvary Scheduled for general amortization in 2023.
The Scorpene class is the Navy’s first modern conventional submarine series in nearly two decades INS Sindhushastra, Purchased from Russia in July 2000.
