Mads Wurtz Schmidt won the sixth leg of the Tirreno-Adriatico on Monday as Tour de France champion Tadze Pogacar retained his overall lead in this year’s ‘Race of the Two Seas’. Wurtz Schmidt took the honor after finishing a sprint at the head of a small group at Lido de Fermo on the Adriatic coast of Italy, which soon broke through the peloton in the 169 km stage and maintained its lead to the finish line. The 25-year-old completed the first leg of the race in three hours, 42 minutes and nine seconds to claim his first win on the World Tour.
After crossing the line, he said, “I am very happy as a pro rider after five years, which I managed to win in the World Tour.”
He charged home ahead of Lotto rider Brent Van Moore, home hope Simone Velasco, John Bacallants and Movistar’s Nelson Olivera.
The group crossed the line a minute before the peloton, with contenders for the overall win.
