The roadside eatery at Redfields Road in Puliyakulam, Coimbatore is attracting attention for its uniqueness. This may sound like a regular food joint selling biryani, but there is a difference.
A small cardboard box is placed next to the restaurant. At the top of it is a slate with a line written in Tamil – ‘Pasikindratha Eduthukonga’ – which means – if you are hungry, take it.
Upon opening the box, it can be found filled with food packets. Thanks to this initiative to feed the poor, the restaurant has become popular on social media, especially during the epidemic.
But it is business as usual for owners Maria Sathesh and his wife Shafarina Satesh. The restaurant sells Biryani, which is priced between 20-30 rupees. While Biriyani is sold on the one hand, those who cannot pay can take packets of free food.
