Lok Sabha OK to bring seven castes under Devendrakula Vellar

The Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which seeks to put seven castes under certain nomenclature of “Devendrakula Vellalars” in certain districts of Tamil Nadu with some exceptions.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said the change in nomenclature was a long pending demand of the community and did not include the deletion or addition of any community. He also said that the list of scheduled castes and why these seven castes were not given a completely new addition to the names of specific castes previously given was to ensure that the old castes issued to these communities under the old castes The certificate name was not rejected.

The opposition supported the bill, saying that the government was acting only on demand as the elections were in Tamil Nadu. Congress MP Dr. Amar Singh said, “I have gone through the files of this case and the demand has been there for some time, and it should have been expedited, but the government dragged its feet with the elections.”

Girish Chandra of Bahujan Samaj Party said that some members of the community were removed from the SC list and added to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list, stating that the bill should have been sent to a parliamentary committee for investigation.

Shiv Sena’s Rahul Shewale demanded an “proactive” approach from the central government on the Maratha reservation issue and violated the 50% cap on reservations set by the Supreme Court in the Indira Sawhney case. Mr. Gehlot said in his reply that it was the Government of Maharashtra that appealed the case to the Supreme Court and the Center was neither a party to the case nor was its opinion sought by the Supreme Court.

BJP MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi praised the bill, saying that Devendrakula belonged to the self-respect of the Vellar community who were, in ancient times, warriors and agitators and gradually lost their position over time. He said, “It is the duty of every government to restore the dignity of the oppressed in society.”

Members of Devendrakula Vellalar, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with BJP to suppress their demand in 2015, cited the reason for this in Tamil Nadu.
