Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan started a year-long celebration, Amrit Festival of Independence, To celebrate 75 years of Indian independence, in Gandhi Thield here on Friday.
A series of activities will be held over the next 75 weeks, which will continue until August 15 next year, to mark 75 years of independence.
The Lieutenant Governor flagged off a boat rally with 75 boats. From her personal Twitter handle, Ms. Soundarajan posted: “Morning sunrise, sea, 75 boats, patriotic songs in the air – initiative to remember our freedom struggle. Excited to flag off this unique rally.”
He also inaugurated a bicycle rally with 75 students and started a campaign to plant 75,000 saplings by planting a sapling on Promenade Beach here.
LG later participated in the 91st anniversary celebrations of the Dandi March.
A special event was organized with students and NSS volunteers featuring performances of classical ragas and patriotic songs.
After honoring veteran freedom fighters, Ms. Soundarajan told media persons that Puducherry was the land of freedom fighters and social reformers like Subramanya Bharathi, Sri Aurobindo and Bharatidasan.
She later left to attend the ceremony of the Telangana royalty.
