Only the best players should represent the country at the Olympics, feels Indian tennis stalwart Leander Paes who has started preparations keeping in mind the Tokyo Games. Speaking on the occasion of the Tennis Premier League auction on Tuesday, Paes said that he has started training hard at the French Open, Wimbledon and Tokyo Olympics to be held in July-August. He said, “I am familiar with the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics. Three big players in the near future and that is what I will focus on.”
Referring to the Olympics, the 47-year-old said, “I have always been a patriot and believe that the single best players should represent the country.”
In December 2019, Pace stated that 2020 would be his final year in the professional circuit but the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world. Paes said that he took a full stop from tennis during the COVID-19 epidemic and has started training for the last three weeks.
Paes said, “By the end of 2019, I was tired of all travel and sports and was at the highest level. The lockdown implemented helped me rejuvenate my father, my mother, my daughter and I.”
“I have started working hard, back to my diet and lost 6 kilograms of weight in three weeks. I am getting back to my rhythm,” he said.
Paes is the co-owner of the Mumbai Leon Army in the Tennis Premier League and the custodian of the event.
