Kerala Assembly Election |  IUML activists protesting against the decision to field Abdul Ghafoor

A group of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activists on Monday lodged their protest against the party’s leadership decision in the constituency of VE Abdul Ghafur for the VE assembly from the constituency as a United States Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in Kalamassery. A senior party leader said that around 500 IUML workers gathered on Monday morning to express dissatisfaction against the decision of the state leadership. Although initial reports said that a protest rally was held, the IUML leader said that in view of the party’s discipline, there was no rally.

Mr. Ghafoor is the son of sitting MLA VK Abrahamim Kunju. Mr. Kunju is one of the prime accused in a corruption case involving the construction of Palarivattom flyover. Senior party leader Ahmed Kabir on Sunday expressed his desire to contest from Kalamassery if the party leadership allows.

The Left Democratic Front is looking for a chance to win a seat from the UDF, which comfortably won the 2011 and 2016 assembly elections. Mr. Kunju had won on both occasions, defeating the veterans of the CPI (M). However, the results of the recent local body elections led to Kalamassery’s LDF candidate P.W. The campaign has given a new impetus to Rajiv. Mr. Rajiv, former Rajya Sabha member and former CPI (M) district secretary, is currently a member of the Party Secretariat.
