The Department of Horticulture is set to unveil the Kabban Park Rejuvenation Project on 22 March, which is celebrated as World Water Day.
The India Care Foundation claimed in a press release that rainwater harvesting and the initiative to recharge groundwater levels have had positive results. Along with the Friends of Lake and Biome Environment, the Foundation worked with the Department of Horticulture on the Rejuvenation Project.
In 2019, two ponds – the pond located behind the Kargada Kunte and Wadiyar statue – and seven wells were rejuvenated inside the park. In addition, 73 recharge wells of 3 feet diameter and an average depth of 15 feet depth were worked out. Each well has the capacity to recharge up to 6 KL during the rains.
“It was observed qualitatively that despite heavy rains, some parts of the park did not get flooded frequently and remained useful for most of this year. It was also seen that ground water level in open wells never dropped 10 feet below ground level due to heat.
The system installed in the park has a minimum capacity of recharging 13 ML and 26 ML annually.
