Joe Douglas wants you to know: He doesn’t care.
The Jets sent quarterback Sam Darnold South to the Panthers on April 5, deploying New York to pick the QB at No. 2 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Some questioned the move. While Darnold’s NFL career has been made ineffective, some believe the troubled quarterback is going to hit his ceiling elsewhere, better than what the Jets offered him.
The Jets general manager Joe Douglas, however, doesn’t care if he’s bad if it happens.
“Do I feel bad or not (for Darnold trading) I can give two-s about this,” Douglas said in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breyer. “I know he’s going to be successful. Time didn’t really work for him here. We can’t move around so fast for him. And it’s not his fault.
“I root for good people, and that friend is a good man, and he is a good doer. I believe that.”

Douglas seems to have control over the situation with the Jets and his rationale for trading Darnold is sound: the USC product is entering its fourth season with a team that is entering a total of 2 years (seemingly Never Ending) Reconstruction.
With their fifth-year option and potential contract extension, the Jets cut the bait and, in Douglas’ own admission, QB wanted to reset the status of the contract. In return, he received a 2022 second-round pick, a fourth round of 2022 and a sixth rounder of 2021. This is a good return when many believe the Jets will move on from Darnold.
At No. 2 in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jets are widely expected to select BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.
And Douglas would certainly give at least half the bullshit about Wilson’s success.
