ISSF World Cup: Indian shooter test COVID-19 positive, negative day after return report

An Indian shooter tested negative on Sunday, a day after returning positive for the highly contagious virus, sources at the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said after the conclusion of the third day of action at the ISSF World Cup. The shooter is expected to return to the team after being released as a precaution. An NRAI source told PTI, “One of the Indian shooters tested negative today. The shooter was tested positive.”

On Saturday night, two more Indian shooters tested positive for COVID-19, with the number of athletes contracting six from the virus during the tournament in the national capital.

As per the guidelines, the positive returning shooters were sent in isolation. The two shooters, whose test report came late on Saturday night, besides two other Indian athletes, returned positive for the virus at the start of the tournament’s second competition day.

A source from the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said, “Two more Indian shooters have tested positive for the virus and it was revealed after their reports came in the night.”

Three shooters, including two from the Indian pistol men’s team, tested positive for the virus on Saturday morning.

The shooters were self-segregated at their team hotel before being transferred to a hospital. Those who shared the room with the three shooters, as well as their other comrades, have also been separated after undergoing COVID tests.

Countries have been allowed to field their MQS (minimum qualification score) shooters, who are out of the main teams due to contracting the virus.

In the first such case here on Thursday, a top international shooter returned positive for COVID-19, after which he was sent to the hospital.

A total of 294 shooters from 53 countries are participating in the tournament including Korea, Singapore, USA, United Kingdom, Iran, Ukraine, France, Hungary, Italy, Thailand and Turkey.

As per ISSF guidelines, no spectators are allowed inside the range during the tournament, which carries ranking points.
