Indian Premier League 2021, Team Profile, Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma likely to make history

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was played in India after last season due to coronavirus in the United Arab Emirates. Even without the support of the home audience, Mumbai Indians won the scorching heat of the UAE to win their fifth IPL title by any franchise in the history of the tournament. The defending champion, captained by Rohit Sharma, will start defending his title in the tournament opener against Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on 9 April. Rohit has a chance to create history by becoming the first captain to win three IPLs – back to the title.

MI’s new stars:

Nathan Culter Nile, Adam Milne and Jimmy Neesham were bought by the defending winner at the Players Auction, but the talk of the town was the recruitment of Arjun Tendulkar.

Mumbai Indians redeemed the son of veteran Sachin Tendulkar at their base price of Rs 20 lakhs.

The five-time IPL champion added veteran Piyush Chawla to his ranks to attract the spin department.

South African young Marco Janssen and Indian uncapped Yudhveer Charak were also bought during the auction by Mumbai Indians.

Old stalwarts:

MI retained the main set of players prior to the auction. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah will all donate blue and gold once again in the upcoming IPL season.

The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who have been part of the Mumbai-based franchise for several seasons, will once again exercise their franchise to secure another win.

Journey of Mumbai Indians in last season:

MI won nine matches and lost just five in the league stages and topped the points table with 18 points as a result.

Promoted

After this, the Rohit Sharma-led team defeated Delhi Capital twice (in the qualifier and then in the final) to claim the title.

If Mumbai Indians manage to replicate the heroines of the previous season, not only will they increase their record of IPL wins to six, but also become the first team to win three consecutive titles.
