Ravichandran Ashwin may have changed things for India in Test cricket, but captain Virat Kohli made a possible return of the experienced off-spinner in the T20. Ashwin last played a T20I in July 2017 while he had an ODI against West Indies in June in the same year. Kohli said all-rounder Washington Sundar, who played in India’s last T20I outing against Australia, remained the hosts’ first choice until they underperformed themselves in the later stages. “Washington is really doing well for us. You can’t have two players (Washington and Aswen) of the same discipline playing in the same place, unless the washery has an awful season and things are going for him in the south. “I mean the question should be asked,” said Kohli in a virtual press conference on Thursday, “You will add Ash when you suggest that Washington works for the team.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that spinner Varun Chakraborty could also be replaced in the team in place of Rahul Chahar as the former failed to make fitness tests mandatory. The Indian captain explained how players need top-level fitness if they have to play for the country.
