Principal Scientist says that Indian Pompano and Orange Spotted Gropper Fish have good demand in domestic market
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) visited here on Friday for the third cage crop of Indian pompano and orange spotted groper.

Chief scientist of Visakhapatnam, Subhadeep Ghosh, head scientist of Visakhapatnam, the regional center of Visakhapatnam, said that both fish varieties have good demand in the domestic market and cage fishing was the future.
In Visakhapatnam, CMFRI has installed 15 cages in RK Beach and five in Mangaramipeta. Dr. Ghosh said that Pompano is cultivated in 10 cages and in another 10 growers.
While the production cost for cage farming is production 200 to c 210 per kg, the selling price of Indian pompano can go up from 350 to ₹ 450. He said that in the domestic market, one can earn a lump sum of 100 to out 150 per kg.
According to CMFRI officials, about 1.5 to 2 metric tons of fish can be harvested to each cage in a season. Thus there can be a profit of c 1.5 to 2 lakhs per cage.
Dr. Ghosh said that through the Pradhan Mantri Matri Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the central government is encouraging cage farming and farmers have a good chance.
At harvest time, he said that fingers weighing about 10 grams were kept in a cage in the first week of May last year, and we harvested 10 months later. He said that every 10 grams of finger has now become a fish weighing between 750 and 850 grams.
Dr. Ghosh said that many farmers and the state fisheries department have generated interest in cage farming.
The state fisheries department has received around 100 applications from Visakhapatnam alone and around 1,000 in the entire state.
