As Karnataka joins four other states for 80% of new infections in India, Bengaluru is beginning a repeat of the scenes since last year when COVID-19 was on a steady rise.
In the last 10 days, 10 wards reported the most number of cases in particular: Arakere, Begur, HSR Layout, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Belandur, Shantanagar, Hagadur, Doddaneki, Banaswadi and New Thippasandra.
However, BBMP does not have any specific plan for these wards. BBMP Commissioner Ann. Manjunath Prasad said that the same scheme will be applicable for other wards as well. “We’re focusing on more testing and more vaccination,” he said.
10-Day Boom
Although the city has been the primary contributor to Kesiolad during this epidemic, the significant growth in the last few days is worrisome. On Saturday, 1,186 new positive cases were reported in Bengaluru Urban, along with five new deaths. According to Friday’s Brutal Bengaluru Mahanagara Palik (BBMP) War Room data, 1,037 new cases were reported.
Recently, BBMP recently said after a detailed analysis on the increase in positive cases, about 70% of people who tested positive for COVID-19 had a history of travel, while others reported a virus. Contracted when they attended weddings and social gatherings, visited places of worship or were in common areas in apartment complexes. The civic body had also said that many cases were coming up from apartments and multi-dwelling units.
Giridhar R. Professor of Epidemiology at the Public Health Foundation of India. Babu said that the BBMP commissioner has already addressed the strategies needed to deal with the increasing numbers in his request to the government. He said, “Some actions they cannot take at the BBMP level, such as banning super spreader incidents, congregation etc., now the government will have to take action.” In addition, it is very important to try to increase contact tracing, increasing the level of testing, and whenever new cases are identified and there is a decrease in on-going transmission.
Recommendations
The civic body has recommended the closure of open air gyms, regular gyms, swimming pools and party or community halls in the parks to prevent the spread of the virus. The government rejected BBMP’s suggestion to reduce occupancy in theaters by 50%.
