Star sprinter Hema Das and national record holder Duti Chand were named in the Indian women’s 4×100 meter squad for the World Athletics Relay, an Olympic athletics competition to be held on Tuesday, May 1 and April 2 in Poland. In the finals of the women’s 100m sprint at the Federation Cup last month, Archana Susendran, Himshree Roy and AT Daneshwari were also named in the squad. India will also team in the men’s 4×400 meter and women’s 4×400 meter relay in Chorzow, Silesia in Poland. The top eight teams in the world athletics relay will automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
The Indian mixed 4×400 meter relay team has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after reaching the final during the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
AFI named a total of 20 athletes for the World Relay. It will be the first major international event for Indian sprinters since the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha in April 2019.
“We are excited to have our athletes prepare for their first international competition after the Kovid-19 inspired hiatus,” AFI President Adile Sumariwala said in a release.
“We were able to hold meetings at NIS Patiala in February and March to instill a sense of competition among our athletes.”
Sumirwala said that AFI was happy that the 100-meter sprinters of women in national camps got her attention.
“With S Dhanalakshmi emerging in the Federation Cup last month, she and Duti Chand are two Indian runners who have competed 11.50 times this season.
“We believe that the 4×100-meter women’s team can put together a good effort with Dhanalakshmi, Duti, Hema Das and Archana Susendran,” he said.
