The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday submitted a PIL petitioning the State Department of Archeology and Tamil University, Thanjavur to conduct a joint inspection of the Ekanathan monastery at Kinimangalam near Madurai, stating that the Tamil inscription dated to over 2,000 . Years old were found on the site.

Hearing the PIL filed by Ananthi’s Division Bench, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Settlement Department was directed to form a committee, inspect the place and file a report. The petitioner stated that art historian Katie Gandhiarajan had found the inscription last year.
He said that a dedicated archaeological excavation at the site and surrounding places was required. The petitioner said that local people and archaeologists had demanded excavation of the site and were visiting the sites.
The petitioner stated that some people can destroy them without knowing the importance of the stone inscription. He also admitted that the area around Kinnimangalam is facing encroachment and encroachment can be done on the site itself. Therefore, the authorities should take steps to protect it, he said.
