Everton’s plans for the new 53,000-capacity stadium have received government approval, the club announced on Friday – a major move as they seek to compete with the “Big Six” of the Premier League. The club currently plays at Goodison Park and has been a nine-time English champion in its illustrious history, but has not won a silver medal since 1995. Goodison Park has been the home of the club since 1892, but the stadium has a capacity of less than 40,000 and has old facilities.

Liverpool City Council approved the plans last month and ministers have now given the green light for the project off the coast of Liverpool, which will cost £ 500 million ($ 690 million).

A statement from Everton wrote: “The decision to approve a new 52,888-capacity waterfront arena allows the club to complete its agreed acquisition of the site … and funding solutions for the project, to ensure that The club can start making plans a reality.

“It is estimated that plans for the development of the stadium and a Goodison legacy will provide a £ 1.3 billion boost to the economy, create more than 15,000 jobs and attract 1.4 million new visitors to the city.

“On such an important day, the Football Club would like to thank every Everton, along with many organizations, thousands of people from the city area, and the team of dedicated staff who have played a key role in ensuring the club is today’s milestone. “

Everton are challenging to make it to the Champions League next season. They sit eighth in the Premier League, with the game in hand, top four to five points.

The club’s 2020 turnover of £ 186 million pushed them to 17th place in Deloitte’s Football Money League, but they have recorded huge losses in the past two seasons due to player spending and the impact of the coronovirus epidemic.
