In order to influence the COVID-19 control work and vaccination program in the city, public health officers of the Greater Chennai Corporation have been prepared for election work.
Of the 28,500 employees identified for election work in 16 assembly constituencies in Chennai district, 102 are sanitation inspectors and 52 are sanitation officers.
According to sources, health inspectors who have been on contract for prevention activities of COVID-19 have also been selected. Sanitation inspectors said they had participated in election training in Chennai district and were not exempted from election work even after public health activities were affected by the election announcement.
Corporation Commissioner Prakash said that public health workers would be exempted from election duty.
Senior officials said the corporation would ask the election officials of the neighboring district to exempt sanitation inspectors and officials from election duty in assembly constituencies like Maduravoyal.
The Chennai District Election Office, headed by Mr. Prakash, covers 16 constituencies in the old city limits. The constituency work in the constituencies is handled by the officials of the neighboring districts.
According to data shared by public health officials, the number of COVID-19 cases in Chennai has been increasing for the past one week, with around 400 cases reported on Wednesday.

Some people who contracted the disease reported Hindu Follow-up action by corporation officials, which had previously been devout, had now become less credible and patchy.
“My wife and I tested positive five days ago. We had fever and related symptoms and were tested through a private lab. After the results came back positive, we were expecting a call from the corporation, but none were received, ”said a person from Velachery. This is in sharp contrast to the control and tracing carried out last year during the peak of the epidemic, he reported. “We teleconferenced with a doctor at a private hospital, who gave some medicine and advised us to calm ourselves down,” he said.
Another person from Mandaweli, who tested positive in early March, shared a similar experience.
“There has not been a single call from the corporation. As I had mild symptoms, I calmed myself at home for 14 days. I thought someone would stick a sticker and paste outside my house like they used to do before. Now, I am not even sure that the officers of the corporation know that I have tested positive, ”he said.
