Galaxy S22: Samsung reveals important news ahead of tomorrow’s launch

Samsung Galaxy fans will finally find out what the new Galaxy S22 range has to offer tomorrow. After months of whispers and rumours, the South Korean technology firm will hold its first major Unpacked event of the year, with the Galaxy S22 set to be the centrepiece.

You’ll need to wait a few more hours to hear about the specifications and new features coming to the handset, but ahead of the live keynote, Samsung has revealed one very important change coming to all models in the Galaxy S22 line-up.

The firm says that all of its upcoming Galaxy phones will be made using an innovative new material that’s aimed at saving the planet.

Instead of generating more unwanted plastic to craft these new handsets, the Galaxy S22 models will use and repurpose fishing nets that often end up being discarded in the ocean.

Explaining more, Samsung said: “Now and into the future, Samsung will incorporate repurposed ocean-bound plastics throughout our entire product lineup, starting with our new Galaxy devices that will be revealed on February 9th at Unpacked.

“These devices will reflect our ongoing effort to eliminate single-use plastics and expand the use of other eco-conscious materials, such as recycled post-consumer material (PCM) and recycled paper. With this transformation, the future of Galaxy technology will bring leading product design and deliver better environmental impact.”

Tech companies are trying hard to be a little more eco-friendly by attempting to recycle more materials and cut down on wasteful packaging and non-essential plastics in the box.

Like Samsung, Apple is making its eco-credentials a large part of the marketing push for its new handsets. Back in 2020, the Californian company dropped the USB plug from the box of all new iPhones. According to Apple, this allows the firm to slim down the box to pack more iPhones into shipping crates (saving on emissions) and those who have previously owned an iPhone can continue to use the same plug.

Samsung followed in Apple’s footsteps last year, with its Galaxy S21 range arriving without a power brick inside the packaging. It seems the Galaxy S22 will also come inside a slimline box with the team at LetsGoDigital recently revealing renders of the upcoming S22 Ultra and the cardboard that will surround it when picking it up stores.

Just like the S21, the S22 appears to be bundled inside a box that’s too thin to include a charger.

Along with being more friendly to the environment, there are plenty more new features that we’re expecting to be included on the S22.

Perhaps the most exciting looks set to be the Ultra model which could see the return of the S Pen stylus which will allow users to scribble on the screen without using their fingers.

This accessory hasn’t been seen since Samsung ditched its Note range of phones back in 2020. Other upgrades could include faster processors, improved cameras and a fully refreshed design.

Samsung’s Unpacked kicks off from 3pm on Wednesday February 9 and we will bring you full details and all news live from this event.
