French startup lobbies to file privacy complaint against Apple

France’s major startup lobby said in a statement that France Digitel will file a complaint against iPhone maker Apple with data privacy watchdog CNIL on Tuesday.

In a seven-page complaint seen by Reuters, the lobby, which represents the bulk of France’s digital entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, alleges that Apple’s latest operating software, iOS 14, does not comply with the EU’s privacy requirements .

On the one hand, argues France Digitel, iPhone owners are asked whether they are willing to allow mobile apps to be installed to define campaign ads and to collect the key identifier used to send targeted ads. Huh.

On the other hand, Apple’s default settings allow the US firm to do its own targeted advertising campaign without explicitly asking iPhone users for their prior consent, France Digitel says.

“The allegations in the complaint are false and will be seen as what they are, a poor attempt by users to divert attention from their actions and confuse regulators and policy makers,” Apple said in a written statement.
