Bolivia’s former interim president Jeanine Enz was arrested on Saturday on charges of terrorism and treason, claiming the government was trying to coup against her predecessor and political rival Evo Morales.
According to media reports, the police also surrounded former ministers who supported the caretaker government of the conservative politician, who stayed for a year after fleeing the country in November 2019 amid conflicting elections.
The arrests came months after Mr Morales returned from exile in October 2020 following a new electoral victory for the founding of the Left Movement for Socialism (MAS) party. Both the Presidency and Congress are now under the control of MAS.
Carlos Eduardo del Castillo, Minister of Government, wrote on Twitter and Facebook, “I inform the people of Bolivia that Mrs. Jeanne Anez has already been arrested and is currently in the hands of the police.”
Mr Castillo congratulated the police for the “great work” in the “historic act of giving justice” to the people of Bolivia.
Bolivian government counsel issued an arrest warrant on Friday on charges of terrorism, treason and conspiracy against a conservative politician and others.
Ms. Anise tweeted a copy of the warrant with a response: “Political harassment has begun.”
He said the government was accusing him of “participating in a coup that never happened.”
In the early hours of Saturday, Bolivian television released Mr. Shown images of Kaj, not handcuffed, arriving at El Alto Airport in La Caz, accompanied by Mr. Castillo and several police officers.
In brief remarks to the press, she described her arrest as “illegal”.
