Ford said trucks and SUVs are being assembled without parts

Ford Motor Co said on Thursday that it will now assemble its flagship, highly profitable F-150 pickup trucks and Edge SUVs in North America without parts and deactivate two assembly plants due to a global semiconductor chip shortage.
The US automaker said the chip shortage, combined with a portion shortage due to the Central American winter storm, is pushing them to build vehicles and then hold them “for several weeks” That they cannot be fulfilled and shipped. The number of affected vehicles is in the “thousands”, a spokesman said.
Ford said it is also deactivating production at plants in Louisville, Kentucky and Cologne, Germany.
Previous forecasts by the Michigan-based company cover the costs associated with these actions, with chip shortages likely to result in $ 1 billion to $ 2.5 billion this year.

Ford said trucks and SUVs are being assembled without parts. It did not identify the affected parts suppliers, but a spokeswoman said the parts required for the F-150 and Edge vehicles are linked to basic vehicle functions, such as windshield wiper motors and infotainment systems.
Ford is canceling the late shift on Thursday and both are in shift on Friday at their Louisville assembly plant, which manufactures the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs. Production is expected to resume in short shifts on Monday and complete production the following day.
In Cologne, where the Fiesta car is built, the plant is being deactivated on 1–16 March and 22 March. The company did not say what amounts were being lost due to that action.
