An FIR was lodged in Bareilly against Wasim Rizvi, former chairman of the UP Shia Waqf Board, with his petition in the Supreme Court seeking the removal of certain verses of the Quran to hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims. He claimed to have promoted terrorism.
An FIR was lodged at the Kotwali police station on Monday evening after police complained to Anjuman Khuddam-e-Rasool’s secretary Shaan Ahmed and an organization called Ittehad-e-Millat Council.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bareilly, Rohit Singh Sajwan said that the case has been registered under Section 295A (willful and malicious act) of the IPC.
Raja Action Committee Chairman Maulana Afroja Raja Qadri claimed that sectarian forces were behind Mr. Rizvi, and it is time to expose him.
On Sunday, members of the Muslim community staged a protest against Mr. Rizvi in Lucknow. Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, a Shia cleric and senior member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and a large number of people took part in the protests in Bara Imambara.
Addressing the gathering that day, Maulana Syed Salman Hasani Nadvi emphasized Muslim unity and described Mr. Rizvi as “Kafir (non-believer)” and “Mujrim (criminal)”.
Nadvi then said, “We are believers of the Quran, Allah first and later Sunni and Shia. So there are no differences between us.”
Maulana Jawwad had told reporters that Wasim Rizvi was part of the “Jamaat (group)” which goes to the extent of betraying its existence and betraying its own religion.
“He has been indulging in anti-religious activities, but this time, he has broken all barriers by raising a finger on the Quran,” Javad said, urging the government to immediately arrest Mr. Rizvi and impose a heavy fine on him.
In Bareilly, the Mufti Ahsan King Qadri of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat, a prominent center of Barelvi Muslims, had also condemned Rizvi’s move, saying that not a single quota of change in the holy book is possible.
In a statement, he had said, “Wasim Rizvi is an enemy of the Quran and Islam. He is doing this to gather cheap popularity and protect himself from the Waqf scam.” Rizvi filed a PIL in the apex court on Thursday.
