National record holder Duti Chand was defeated by S Dhanalakshmi for second place, while Hema Das was disqualified after a false start in the much-awaited women’s 100m sprint final at the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships in Patiala on Tuesday. 22-year-old Dhanalakshmi of Tamil Nadu won the gold medal by 11.39 seconds ahead of Odisha’s Duti (11.58) to become the fastest woman of the championship on the second day of competitions at the NIT Campus. Archana Susendran, another Tamil Nadu runner, finished third in 11.76.

It was after Hema, who was running in the 100m and 200m short sprint races instead of her event 400m, was disqualified after a false start.

The much-awaited final did not meet expectations as Hema was shown a red card, while Dutti and Dhanalakshmi came nowhere near the Olympic qualification mark of 11.15 seconds.

Dhanalakshmi qualified for the finals on Monday as the fastest runner in the preliminary round with a time of 11.38 and did not improve her time on Tuesday.

The same was the case with Dooty, who scored 11.51 on Monday. Gurvindervir Singh of Punjab won the men’s 100m final in 10.32 seconds, while Tamil Nadu’s Alkiyakadasan Kannada (10.43) and Maharashtra’s Satish Krishnakumar (10.56) finished second and third.

Odisha national record holder Amiya Kumar Mallick finished seventh with a time of 10.75.

Gurindervir clocked a personal best 10.30 seconds at the third-fastest time by an Indian best runner in the semi-finals on Monday.
