Farmer unions called for a Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, March 26, when their protests against the three new agricultural laws of the Center on Delhi’s borders were completed for four months.
Farmer leader Buta Singh Burjgil said that the farmers, along with the trade union, would oppose the hike in fuel prices and privatization of railways on March 15.
“We will observe the full India bandh on 26 March. Our protest against the three agricultural laws will be completed for four months. The peaceful bandh will remain in effect from morning to evening,” Singhu told reporters.
He said that on March 19, farmers will celebrate “Save Mandi-Save Khati” Day.
Farmer unions have also decided to celebrate the ‘Martyrdom Day’ of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.
Farmer leaders also said that copies of new farm laws will be lit on March 28 during ‘Holika Dahan’.
Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, are camping at the Delhi border points — Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur. For more than four months, there has been a demand for repeal of agricultural laws and legal guarantees. Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.
The protesting farmers have expressed fears that these laws will pave the way for the dismantling of the MSP system, leaving them at the “mercy” of large corporations.
However, the government has ensured that the new laws will bring better opportunities for farmers and introduce new technologies in agriculture.
