State TV reported that one person was killed in Sunday’s blast and three others were injured in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Balochistan, as details about the incident are scarce.
The TV report reported that a public square in the town of Saravan exploded as a “Blind Terrorist Act” that killed a pedestrian. It was not clear who was behind the apparent attack.
Sistan and Balochistan provinces are a well-worn trafficking route for drugs and petrol and are the scene of occasional conflicts between Iranian government forces and various terrorist groups. It is also the province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, where a Sunni separatist group linked to al-Qaeda and called the Jaish al-Adal, or the army justice, operates.
Unrest broke out in the province after guards on the Iranian border shot and killed several fuel traders last month. The protesters, with light weapons, stormed police stations and government buildings, which brought down the government.
The region is one of the least developed and poorest parts of Iran.
