EE vs Three vs Vodafone vs O2: Battle for fastest 5G broadband takes surprise turn

It’s difficult for studies to gauge average mobile speeds due to the amount of variables – such as people moving between different areas, having different devices and each living in places with different surroundings.

However, the Ookla study did use a wide sample to come to its findings – with 190,055 speed tests conducted on Three UK users, 123,242 on Vodafone, 251,626 for EE and 64,737 on O2.

The study placed Three UK as the leader for median download speeds by some margin, with the operator on 231Mbps, compared to second placed Vodafone on 159Mbps, O2 on 155Mbps and EE on 151Mbps.

However, in the aftermath of this study being published mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics published its latest report into 5G performance.

And this study praised EE for its “consistent broad availability … fast speeds and reliability”.

The research also looked at the performance of O2, Vodafone, Three as well as EE in 16 cities.
