About 23% of the settlements in the East Godavari district, most of which are in the Godavari delta, are suffering from the problem of drinking water this summer.
Data available with the Rural Water Supply Department show that out of a total of 3,467 796 habitations in the district, there is likely to be a shortage of drinking water since mid-May.
These settlements mostly depend on the groundwater that they get from borewells. Divisional level committees have completed a field survey to identify the available surface and groundwater sources and the status of maintenance of summer storage tanks.
Irrigation authorities have decided to stop releasing water through the canals by the end of March to facilitate the Polavaram project works. In addition, the water level in the Godavari river also decreases in the summer months.
Officials will have to fill the summer storage tank by the end of March to ensure drinking water supplies for the rest of the summer.
“It is estimated that 796 settlements in the district will face a shortage of drinking water by the end of May. About 80% of these dwellings are in the Godavari delta. For the implementation of the Summer Action Plan for drinking water supply, a proposal demanding 12 crore grant has been submitted to the government, “Rural Water Supply Superintending Engineer T. Gayatri Devi told Hindu
East Godavari Collector d. In a recently held review meeting chaired by Muralidhar Reddy, district officials have decided to transport drinking water by vehicles to needy settlements.
“We are well prepared to transport drinking water to needy settlements, including accessible tribal pockets in the district. In total, 815 borewells have been identified for cleaning because the water has turned into mud due to the depletion of groundwater level, ”said Ms. Gayatri Devi.
