Doctors perform robotic kidney transplants

A team of doctors from GEM Hospital and Research Center, Chennai has successfully performed a robotic kidney transplant on a 36-year-old female patient who was suffering from kidney disease for the past eight years. Her husband was a donor.

Chairman of GEM Hospitals c. Palanivelu said in a press conference here on Thursday that the benefits of laparoscopy and robotic kidney transplantation were that it was a painless procedure and the patient and donor recovery rate was fast.

“With minimal invasive surgery, the patient is less likely to have a hernia and the immune level is better,” he said. He said that soon after completing the surgery, another person underwent an operation. “Everything, including arterial involvement, robotic weapons are used,” he said.

Swaminathan Sambandam, Head of Transplant Surgery at GEM Hospital, said that only three key-hole incisions were made to remove the kidney and 5 cm. These surgeries are more accurate, leaving patients with smaller scars.

Prabhu Kanchi, head of nephrology and renal transplant at GEM Hospital, said it was good that the family understood the importance of the transplant, and her husband agreed to donate the organ. “We noticed that the kidney started functioning on the operation table itself. He said that the kidney function (creatinine level) of the patient returned to normal within three days.
