Dissatisfaction with IUML over Gafoor’s nomination

Fielding VE Abdul Ghafur, son of the noted Indian Union Maslin League (IUML) leader VK Abrahamim Kunju from Kalamassery constituency, has caused dissatisfaction between the party’s rank and file in the district.

Mr. Kunju is under a cloud after being accused in a corruption scandal in connection with the Palarivattom flyover.

Mr. Gafoor was included in the list of 25 IUML candidates released by the party’s state leadership on Friday.

Senior IUML leaders in the district acknowledged widespread dissatisfaction in Mr Gafoor’s candidacy in defiance of sentiments among local party workers and leaders. The district IUML leadership had filed a petition with the state leadership regarding the activities of Mr. Kunju and his son, which had made the party defensive a few months earlier.

“The two-member commission of inquiry, comprising leaders MK Munir and Abdurrahman Randhani constituted by the state committee, investigated the case and submitted a report. However, before considering the party leadership report, the local body elections were declared after the assembly elections, ”said a senior district level leader.

He said that Mr. Gafoor’s nomination did not go well with the party workers at the grassroots level.
