CPI (M), CPI announces candidates for Ernakulam district

Fielding its three MLAs and inducting some candidates from major socio-religious groups under a Social Balancing Act, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] The district released its list of candidates for the assembly elections on Wednesday. The Communist Party of India (CPI) will field Aldo Abraham once again from his seat in Muhavattuzha. The party is yet to announce its candidate for Parvoor seat. The list of UDF candidates is expected shortly.

Kj maxi, m. Swaraj, and Antony John, CPI (M) candidates who won the last assembly elections from Kochi, Thripunithura and Kothamangalam constituencies in 2016, were again fielded from their constituencies.

CPI-M member of its state secretariat P.W. Rajiv has been fielded to win the Kalamassery seat from the Indian Union Muslim League. VK Ibrahim Kunju represented the constituency in the outgoing assembly.

Mr. Rajiv scored unsuccessful runs in the 2019 parliament election. He had also unsuccessfully contested from Vadakkare assembly constituency. The UDF and IUML still have to decide on their candidate for the seat, as the controversy over the Palarivattom flyover corruption case, in which Mr. Kunju is an accused, is furious.

In Wiipen, the party held sitting MLA S. Has rested Sarma, who has an impressive track record of being elected to the state assembly six times. KN Unnikrishnan, CPI (M) District Secretariat member, will be the LDF candidate from the coastal constituency.

In kunnathunad

PV Sreenijan, former Youth Congress leader and Congress candidate from Narjakkal constituency, is the CPI (M) candidate for Kunnathunad assembly constituency. Sri Srinijan, the son-in-law of former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan, was defeated in the 2006 election by MK Purushothaman of the CPI-M. Later, Sri Srinijan partnered with the Congress and aligned himself with the CPI (M).

The Congress may ask sitting MLA VP Sajendran to contest the seat once again. The corporate-backed Twenty20 has also fielded a candidate in Kunnathunad.

The Left Front has fielded Shaji George from Ernakulam constituency as an independent candidate and the UDF is likely to field sitting MLA TJ Vinod to sit with him. Mr. George is a publisher and former vice president of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council.

Jay Jacob, a medical doctor, is the party’s choice for Thrikkara constituency. Here too, the LDF candidate will face sitting MLA and Congress strongman PT Thomas.

Former Congress MLA representing Aluva K. Shelna Nishad, the architect and daughter-in-law of Muhamdali, is the party’s candidate for Aluva constituency. Mr. Muhamdali has a notable track record of representing the constituency in six straight words from 1980 to 2001. This trade union leader a. It was Yusuf who ended the Congress’ winning streak in the constituency. However, the party won the constituency back in 2011 through Anwar Sadath, who was re-elected in 2016. Mr. Sadath is likely to defend his seat in the upcoming election.
