Before the upcoming assembly elections, CPI General Secretary D. Raja said that political compulsions were behind the limited share of seats for the Left parties in Tamil Nadu. He also defended the Left Front’s alliance with Muslim Secular Abbas Siddiqui’s party, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) in Bengal.
The DMK has given only six seats to the CPI and CPI in Tamil Nadu, when the latter demanded a number that touched at least double digits.
“There are many political compulsions which are understandable. We tried our best to get a good share, but it was not possible. We felt that it was more important to stop the BJP in the state, which is trying to gain a foothold on the shoulders of the AIADMK, ”said Mr. Raja Hindu.
However, the CPI leader acknowledged that the Left’s seat in the coalition often did not correspond to the political and ideological influence it had wiped out.
Bengal tie-up
The Left Front in Bengal has faced severe criticisms for its alliance with the Greenhorn Party ISF, headed by Furfura Sharif Abbas Siddiqui. The Left Front has been slammed for winning 37 seats for the party, considered by many to be communal.
Defending the decision, Mr. Raja said, “There is no evidence that ISF or Mr. Siddiqui has stopped communal violence.” Just because ISF has enough Muslim following which does not make it communal. If this was the case, what should we say to the BJP, which promotes communal fascist politics? “
He said that elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry were important to save India’s secular democratic structure.
Mr. Raja also claimed that the Left Front’s political line in Bengal was faulty, with an emphasis on targeting the ruling TMC rather than the revivalist BJP.
“There is no doubt that in Bengal, the BJP will have to stop. Also, we should ask the question how did we reach this pass. Who allowed the entry of BJP in the state? Who opened the doors for them? ” He asked.
Mamta incident
Regarding the alleged attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the CPI leader said that while it was clear that she was injured, it was for the Bengal authorities to find out how the incident happened.
TMC claimed in a memorandum to the Election Commission on Friday that unknown miscreants tried to kill Ms. Banerjee.
Condemning the incident, Mr. Raja said, “There should be no place for violence in politics.”
