With only a few days left for the election of high stakes, the state is seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19 infections.
The state registered 303 cases and one death in the last 24 hours. There were 96 cases registered in Kolkata and 74 in North 24 Parganas. Except for three, all 23 districts recorded infections in the last 24 hours. On March 16, the state recorded 255 infections. Experts warn that a breach of the security protocol, when there is a large gathering during the election, may aggravate the situation.
Chairman of the Board of Administrators of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Farhad Hakim said that the safe houses of the KMC have been closed, but the health department will remain ready and maintain its vigilance to control the situation.
Three persons, including a female prisoner of Alipore Women’s Correctional Home, died in South Kolkata, allegedly due to diarrhea. The death of a five-year-old girl, which has taken place in the last 48 hours and the affected area is ward number 73 (Bhawanipore) of the city. Mr. Hakeem said that there is a possibility of contamination of water in the KMC supply, but said that people claim that people have died due to contamination.
In Bhawanipur, three people have died after drinking water contaminated by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been an MLA from this AC for the last 10 years. His close aide Farhad Hakim is the mayor of KMC.
