District Conservator Minister Nitin Raut announced on March 11 that “strict lockout” would be implemented in Nagpur from March 15 to 21 in view of the spike in COVID-19 cases.
The district has been reporting a spike in daily affairs since last month.
Mr Raut chaired a meeting of top district officials in Nagpur and later told reporters that the lockout would be implemented at the Nagpur Police Commissionerate boundary from 15 to 21 March.
In January last year, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appointed the custodian minister for all the 36 districts of the state.
Mr. Raut said that during the lockout, private offices would remain closed, while government offices would operate at 25 percent capacity.
Shops of essential commodities will remain open, the minister said. Alcohol will be sold online only during the lockdown period.
Mr. Raut said that people should not go out unnecessarily.
On 22 February, some restrictions were imposed in Nagpur, including stringent restrictions on weekends.
On Wednesday, the district reported 1,710 new coronovirus cases, pushing its total to 1,62,053.
There are currently 12,166 active COVID-19 cases in Nagpur.
According to official figures, a total of 4,417 people have died due to viral infections so far in the district.
