Coronavirus | Will try to give UK more vaccine doses later: Serum Institute

SII CEO Adar Poonawala urged other countries to wait for the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield, as the company is directed to prioritize India’s needs.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has stated that it will later try to supply more doses of the Oxford-AstraAnica COVID-19 vaccine to the United Kingdom, depending on the current status and requirement of the government’s vaccination program in India.

The UK’s National Health Service has warned of a drastic reduction in the weekly supply of vaccines to prevent COVID-19 by the end of this month. When contacted, a SII spokesperson said “a few weeks ago five million doses were delivered to the UK and we will try to supply the latter, depending on the current situation and the need for a government vaccination program in India”.

Last month, SII CEO Adar Poonawala urged other countries to wait for the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield, as the company is directed to prioritize India’s needs.

In addition to efforts to meet India’s needs, Vaccine Major is doing its best to balance the needs of the rest of the world, he said.

“Dear countries and governments, as you await the #COVISHIELD supply, I humbly request you to please be patient, @SerumInstIndia is directed to prioritize India’s vast needs and with it the rest of the world. Has also met the requirements of. We are trying our best ”, Mr. Poonawala said in a tweet.
