Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday and is self-isolated at home, said Dr Faisal Sultan, his top aide of health, two days after getting his first shot at vaccination.
Mr Khan, 67, was vaccinated on Thursday as part of a nationwide anti-coronavirus vaccination campaign that is undergoing its first phase.
The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. Sultan confirmed on Twitter that Mr. Khan had contracted Coronavirus.
“PM Imran Khan has tested positive for Kovid-19 and is isolating himself at home,” he said in a tweet.
Mr. Khan’s spokesperson, Dr. Shahbaz Gill said that the Prime Minister has mild fever and cough.
Mr Khan’s supporters and ministers began sending messages of goodwill soon after sharing the news of his diagnosis with #ImranKhan becoming the top trend on Twitter.
Science Minister Fawad Chaudhary said that the people of Pakistan are praying for their leader. “God return him soon for good health.” Marine Affairs Minister Ali Hyder Zaidi said the premiere would soon recover and return to work “in a flash”.
Mr. Khan remained active until Friday when he visited Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and inaugurated a highway and educational block of a university.
He urged citizens to ensure full implementation of norms to prevent the increase in cases of coronovirus.
Pakistan officials said last week that the country was in the grip of a third wave of epidemics.
According to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronovirus Tracker, 623,135 cases and 13,799 cases have been reported in Pakistan so far.
