India reported 40,953 new coronovirus infections in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day increase in 111 days, taking the country’s cumulative COVID-19 tally to 1,15,55,284.
The Health Ministry said on Saturday that 188 people died in the country during this period, with a total death toll of 1,59,558, while 2,88,394 are active cases.
India is witnessing an increase in COVID deaths after touching less than 100 deaths per day in February. This year saw a drop from the end of January to the middle of February with just 8,000 cases per day.
According to the data released by the ministry, currently Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh report a spike in new cases.

Maharashtra has the highest daily number of 25,681 cases reported. This was followed by 2,470 in Punjab and 1,984 new cases in Kerala. Eight new states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Haryana are showing increasing estimates of daily new cases. Kerala, however, is showing a steady decline, ”the ministry said.
It states that India’s total active caselad currently stands at 2,88,394 with Maharashtra, Kerala and Punjab accounting cumulatively for 76.22%.
Cumulative recovery is 1,11,07,332 with 23,653 recoveries registered in the last 24 hours. While 188 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, 81.38% of new deaths occurred in five states. Maharashtra recorded a maximum of 70 accidents, Punjab followed 38 while Kerala carried out 17 fatal attacks.
Amid the increase, doctors have requested the central government to extend vaccination cover to include caregivers of patients who are bedridden.

With the next wave imminent, it is imperative that we include and vaccinate the caregivers of the elderly, the disabled and the bedridden as soon as possible. ‘
