Haffkine Biopharma Corporation, Mumbai has received permission from the Central Government to manufacture Bharat Biotech’s anti-coronavirus vaccine Covaxin on the basis of technology transfer.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this late on Thursday evening.
The state government sent a proposal to the Center in the last week of February stating that Hafkin’s infrastructure, known for vaccine production, could be used to produce the corona vaccine in the country. Mr. Thackeray also raised the issue in his video-conference with Mr. Modi last month.
Sitaram Kunte, the Chief Secretary of the State Government, received a letter from Renu Swaroop, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, based on the recommendation of the Technical Committee of Scientists. The letter stated that experienced and trained technicians should be appointed to ensure the production of the vaccine at the earliest.
Mr. Thackeray has instructed Mr. Kunte to appoint a senior officer to oversee the project and ensure timely delivery of the vaccine.
