The Congress and the CPI-M have retained their candidates for the Aranthangi and Gandharvakottai (reserved) assembly segments for the upcoming election.
Congress candidate ST Ramachandran, Tiruchi Lok Sabha MP and six-time Aranthangi Assembler MLA Su. Thirunarukkarasar, this time M. of AIADMK. Horn will play with Rajnayagam. CPI (M) candidate M. Chinnadurai, AIADMK candidate S. Jayabharathi will wave the swords with the panchayat president of Thenthanaviduthi.
Both suffered defeat during the 2016 elections at the hands of AIADMK candidates. Although Mr. Ramachandran gave a spirited fight, he eventually lost by a margin of 2,291 votes. The Congress was also an ally of the DMK-led coalition in the last assembly election.
In 2016, the CPI-M was a constituent of Makkal Nala Kottani, comprising two leftist parties, DMDK, MDMK and Tamil Manila Congress. Mr. Chinnadurai was behind in terms of the number of votes of AIADMK and DMK.
Mr. Chinnadurai, 54, who is the state secretary of Tamil Nadu Vivasa, Thozhilalar Sangam, was the Pudukottai district secretary of the party for a decade.
Barring Gandharvakottai and Aranthangi, the remaining four seats – Pudukottai, Viralimalai, Alangudi and Tirumayam – will also face a direct contest between AIADMK and DMK this time too.
VP Nagimali, CPI (M) Kilavel competitor, finished third in 2016.
The CPI made K. Kottur Sangh secretary of the party in Thiruvuripundi assembly constituency. Marimuthu and state committee member have been nominated.
