Coal scam |  West Bengal CID arrested close associate of main accused Lala

This was the first arrest made by the State Criminal Investigation Department since the investigation into the scam began, an official of the state investigative agency said.

An official of the State Investigation Agency said on Saturday that the West Bengal CID arrested Arup Majhi alias Lala, the main accused in the multi-crore rupee coal scam, from Andal in Pasim Bardhaman district.

He said that this is the first arrest made by the State Criminal Investigation Department since the investigation into the scam began. The officer said that the arrested person is identified as Randhir Singh, who had been working for Lala for a long time and was involved in the scam.

He said, ‘On the basis of a secret information, the CID people arrested Singh from Andal on Friday night. The officer said that we are questioning him to get more information about his involvement in this scam. PTI.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate are jointly investigating the scam, while the state CID has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the scam.

The CBI has also issued a look out notice for Lala. The Central Investigation Agency has also questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek Banerjee’s wife and sister-in-law in connection with the investigation into the scam.

It has conducted raids in several places in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The state CID has visited some places in the Asansol-Raniganj coal belt, which is being investigated for scams and accused of illegal mining and coal theft from the collieries of Kunustoria and Meja in the nearby Bardhaman district.
