Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics on Monday unveiled virus countermeasures for the test event that will resume for the first time later this week as the Games were postponed by the epidemic. The Tokyo 2020 chiefs promised to hold the remaining 18 test events – which act as dress rehearsals for each game – in a “safe and secure” manner, to see that they “work towards the game” “What can be learned. The test events were halted last year after the sport climbing was held from 6 to 8 March, as Tokyo 2020 staff replaced athletes due to infection concerns.
The first test event after the unprecedented postponement of the Games will be wheelchair rugby on April 3-4, with water polo to follow a week later.
Tokyo 2020 Games distribution officer Hidemasa Nakamura said the viruses will be based on the manuals unveiled by the organizers earlier this year.
“We are trying to limit contact, avoid handshakes and other physical contact, and keep distance between athletes – one meter if two is not possible,” he said.
Rip-tearing will be banned every 30 minutes.
Fourteen Tests will be held by Tokyo 2020, with the other four bouts being run by international federations.
Nakamura said the athletics test event at Tokyo’s National Stadium on May 9 will be the only event in Tokyo 2020 in which foreign athletes will participate and spectators will be present.
He said that four events organized by international federations would involve fans and foreign athletes – diving, water polo, artistic swimming and marathons.
Sports official Yasuo Mori said, “Athletes coming to events organized by international federations will have to undergo immigration control, so they are certainly important test events for the organizing committee.”
